WINGNUT is the OG
Owner/designer Scott Gibson began WINGNUT in 2005 as a response to adventure racing teams and their love for the innovative low riding hydration pack system he created. After 8 years in the travel industry making bags, and riding to work, Scott developed a simple ergonomic design for long distance cycling that positions pack weight in center of gravity while cycling. He then combined that with a patented wingpocket design, and pioneered the innovative use of sail cloth technology. He called the company WINGNUT in honor of the adventure racing spirit of the teams he worked with in the wrecking crew, and together blazed a trail for a new era of cycling packs, lite weight waterproof tech and even participated in early off grid tech solutions. Alot has happened in the last 18 years, along the way Scott developed off grid renewable energy systems along side our race support, took production off shore, spread internationally, and faced family struggles that put WINGNUT on the side lines when he had to care for his father. Scott has never given up the core design studio, and in 2018 brought the line back home to USA to give it an upgrade. Currently all packs are custom made in Hudson Valley of New York and we welcome you to stop by, see the process, participate in the process and ask for anything custom made your heart can dream of.
2018 — 2023: The Rebuilding Years
For the last 5 years WINGNUT has been reestablishing its Made in USA design and development capabilities. The core Design Studio had been a shared maker space since 2012 and this Collaborative space, where other creatives came to explore electronics, solar off grid systems, up-cycling designs, and beer brewing. This experience changed the core values of WINGUT, and now operates from the new triple bottomline or what is commonly known as a B corporation. Community building projects are part of our annual effort, from Brew Sheds to connect beer brewing to water protection, to building Bike racks along the empire state trail at local farm to table and breweries throughout the Hudson Vally of NY. We try to do it all, from making a widget to building an experience and supporting other local industries.
To say MADE IN USA isn’t what it used to be is an understatement, from supply chain issues, to covid, to the lost art of sewing craftsmanship, the struggle is real. We Cut and helped produce 8,000 masks in first 6 months of covid, and slowly rebuilt our supply chain and staff, and have been designing new product for travel lifestyle. These LIFESTYLE DESIGNS are the first new designs since WINGNUT began with the core 6 items in 2005, and we are endeavoring to make them as custom to your desires as we can, simply because that is what MADE IN THE USA means today. It isn’t easy, god knows the world is a cookie cutter kind of place. WINGNUT is about blazing new trails, having fun and like a WINGNUT being a better, simple solution by design.
