**Danielle Musto’s Third SS Win at Iceman with Wingnut**
I ended my 2007 Season racing my Single Speed at the Iceman Cometh Challenge this past weekend in Traverse City, Michigan. I won the SS division for the last two years, and was determined to make it a 3-Peat.
The SS men and women took off together, resulting in a mass start of 100 plus racers. I took the lead out of the women from the beginning and never looked back. The course was hardpacked and really fast. I ran a 32X14 gear ratio, and was able to pass a lot of people throughout the race.
By the time I crossed the finish line I had a 7-minute lead over the second placed female.
The season isn't completely over yet though! I'm racing a few cross races over the next couple of weeks to prepare for the State Cross Championships in early December.
**About Danielle Musto - Mountain Bike Endurance Racer**
Danielle Musto's transition from non-biker, to
beginner cross-country racer, to solo endurance
champion was a miraculously fast one. In August 2001, the Grand Rapids, Michigan native went
on a bike ride around her neighborhood with her future husband and mountain bike racer and found that not only did she enjoy it, she could also keep up with him.
Three weeks later she entered her first mountain bike race and won. The following summer she picked up where she left off and began racing cross country again, but soon found her interests and abilities were better suited for endurance racing.
Although she admits to crying from exhaustion as she cross the finish line of her first 24 hour race-24 hours of Boyne-she broke the race's female record for most miles ridden during the race by 70 miles.
Last year, Musto made the podium in every big race she competed in. She placed second in the Norba 24 hour National Championships and is also the Michigan Female Singlespeed State Champion.
For 2007, Musto will focus on the Norba 24 Hour
National Championships in July, the 24 Hour World Solo Championships in September, and the National Endurance Series. In October, she will be riding 100 miles in Death Valley to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
